What is Autism?

The National Autistic Society defines Autism as a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, as well as how they experience the world around them. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) refer to a range of different conditions that are characteristically similar, encompassing challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours and communication difficulties. These conditions are relatively common. According to figures provided by the National Autistic Society, approximately 700,000 people are on the Autistic Spectrum in the UK alone, which equates to more than one in every 100 people.
